The Sidoarjo mud flow or Lapindo mud, also informally abbreviated as Lusi, a contraction of Lumpur Sidoarjo (lumpur is the Indonesian word for mud), is a since May 2006 ongoing eruption of gas and mud in the subdistrict of Porong, Sidoarjo in East Java, Indonesia (20 kilometers south of Surabaya). It is considered to be a mud volcano. It appears that the flow will continue indefinitely and so far all efforts to stem the flow have failed. source: www.wikipedia.org

The House of Representatives has recommended the government include three more villages in its map of areas devastated by the mudflow in Sidoarjo, East Java, and compensate residents of these villages too. Priyo Budi Santoso, deputy head of the House's Monitoring Team for the Handling of the Lapindo Mudflow (TP2LS), on Thursday told a hearing with the government and mining firm Lapindo Brantas Inc. that the inclusion of West Siring, Jatirejo and Mindi villages in the map was based on a recommendation by the East Java governor and Sidoarjo regent. |

The cause of the mudflow is still disputed. John Snedden an AAPG member (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) wants to work towards answering the questions, so during the October AAPG Intl. Conference and exhibition in Cape Town, he is putting together a symposium on what caused the disaster, natural - or otherwise. The forum's purpose is "to draw a line under the scientific controversy". (source: AAPG site)
